Steve can’t believe he let himself get carried away like that.
It’s not altogether surprising given that it was Robin those assholes were picking on, but he can’t remember the last time he allowed himself verbally tear into someone like that. Let alone in public. Let alone in front of Eddie. His boyfriend. Who was looking at him in pure shock as Steve swerved around and practically threw himself into the store.
He ignores Robin calling his name, and hastily makes his way to the backroom. He doesn’t even have a shift today, isn’t supposed to be here but the thought of facing Eddie is more terrifying than being in a facility he actively daydreams about leaving forever on actual work hours.
“Shit.” he says under his breath and slides down to sit on the floor. He draws his knees up to his chest and looks up at the ceiling. How high are the chances that Eddie will just forget this ever happened and leave him be and -
The door opens with a loud thud and Eddie has at least enough decency to look sheepish as he closes it softly.
His hair is a mess, he’s flushed red down to the nape of his neck. Eddie looks like he ran here, and he’s got this wild look in his eyes that Steve doesn’t know what to make of.
They stare at each other for one loaded moment as Eddie seems to be trying to catch his breath.
“You went all out on them, huh?” Eddie says at last, a sharp little smirk tugging at the edges of his mouth and Steve blanches, hugging his legs a bit closer.
“Wanna rub it in?” Steve asks lightly and his chest tightens when he sees Eddie’s smile fall. “It’s okay, just lay it on me already.”
Eddie watches him carefully and then steps further into the room. He drops down to sit on the floor in front of Steve, legs crossed and posture rigid.
“I think I’m confused.” Eddie says, voice soft and Steve bites the inside of his cheek so hard he tastes blood. He doesn’t know what to make of this softness either. But he knows that he absolutely can’t handle it.
